Fast-growing California airport has seen passenger numbers jump 75% in less than a decade

Ontario, CA – More than 600 business and regional leaders gathered Wednesday for Ontario International Airport’s (ONT) annual State of the Airport event, celebrating the airport’s rapid growth and impact on the region. Since returning to local ownership in 2016, ONT has seen a remarkable 75% increase in passengers, expected to surpass 7 million this year, and has become the 10th largest cargo hub in North America.

ONT Board President Alan D. Wapner emphasized the airport’s unmatched 43-month streak of year-over-year passenger growth.

The event featured a fireside chat with Southwest Airlines COO Andrew Watterson, who shared insights on Southwest’s new initiatives, including assigned seating and a direct route to Baltimore starting in June 2025. Recent highlights also include new service to California wine country via Avelo Airlines.

ONT Chief Executive Atif Elkadi praised the Inland Empire’s growth, calling it the “new heart of Southern California.” The airport’s support has been bolstered by local Congressional members, securing critical funding for upgrades, including $90 million for runway rehabilitation and $7 million for security enhancements.
