Republican incumbent says he won crucial Southern California House race; Democratic challenger says it’s still ‘too close to call’

In a message posted to his social media accounts on Monday, longtime Republican Rep. Ken Calvert thanked Riverside County voters for once again placing “their trust” in him to “continue delivering results for them in Washington.”

Calvert (R-Corona), who has been in office since 1993 in California’s 44th, 42nd, 43rd and currently 41st Congressional District, said he earned a “hard-fought victory” in yet another defense of his incumbency. His declaration came after Decision Desk HQ called the race at about 5:47 p.m. Monday.

However, his opponent thinks that victory proclamation came far too soon.

Democrat Will Rollins, a 40-year-old former counterterrorism prosecutor, wrote to social media followers on Monday that his campaign views the race as “too close to call.”

“Our campaign is following the election results extremely closely, with eyes and ears at the Registrar of Voters every single day,” a statement issued Monday night reads. “Between vote-by-mail ballots and conditional ballots already waiting to be counted, and more mail arriving at the Registrar’s office tomorrow, there could be at least 80,000 votes left to count in California’s 41st Congressional District. We view the race as too close to call and will continue to monitor the results as we wait for potentially 20% or more of the electorate to have their voice heard.”
