JCPenney to Close Once Thriving Northern California Store as Part of Nationwide Shutdowns

SAN BRUNO, CA – JCPenney has announced the closure of eight more stores nationwide in 2025, including its location at The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno. This move follows the retailer’s ongoing financial struggles, which have led to the shuttering of 200 stores since filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020, according to USA Today.

Alongside California, closures will impact locations in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and West Virginia. A company spokesperson cited “expiring lease agreements, market changes, or other factors” as reasons for the closures.

Meanwhile, JCPenney recently merged with Forever 21, Brooks Brothers, and other brands under “Catalyst Brands,” aiming to open 1,800 stores nationwide and employ 60,000 workers.
