Atmospheric River Timeline as California Braces for Winter Storm

Numerous weather alerts are in place across California on Tuesday as an atmospheric river brings heavy snow, rain and strong winds to the Golden State.

So far this season, California’s snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains has been below average . An ongoing atmospheric river is bringing a winter storm with up to 4 feet of snow in some portions of the mountain range.

People living in the area have been warned of dangerous travel conditions from Tuesday night through Thursday night.

Atmospheric rivers are a “long, narrow region in the atmosphere—like rivers in the sky—that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
