Horseback rider dies after being hit by car in Riverside County; 2nd rider seriously injured

One rider was killed and a second was left seriously injured when a car struck two horses in the Anza area of Riverside County Sunday night.

The crash was reported on SR-371 near Contreras Road shortly before 9:30 p.m. California Highway Patrol officers arrived to find that two female riders had been ejected as a result of the crash.

One of the women was pronounced dead at the scene. The second rider was taken to a nearby hospital with major injuries, a CHP spokesperson confirmed to KTLA.

Investigators learned that a group of family and friends was riding eastbound on the shoulder of SR-371 when two of the horses veered onto the highway lanes for unknown reasons…
