While summer is often dominated, delightfully, by sunflowers, tomatoes, corn, and the other warmth-loving stars of the garden, some people have something else on their mind: Growing gargantuan pumpkins.

Like really hefty specimens, the kind of fantastical fruits that require an oversized scale and a truck with a big bed.

Several of those specimens will roll into Irvine Regional Park in Orange for a rite of pumpkin passage, one that hopes to find some of the jaw-dropping-est gourds around…
