Riverside County Launches 911 Nurse Navigation Program to Ease ER Demand

A new approach to emergency calls is rolling out across Riverside County. Starting this week, some 911 callers with non-threatening medical issues may be connected to a nurse instead of receiving an ambulance response.The 911 medical response is designed to ease overcrowding in emergency rooms while ensuring ambulances remain available for the most serious emergencies.In January 2022, the Board of Supervisors established a committee to formally examine how to alleviate emergency ambulance services, mostly as a result of overwhelming “patient offload” to emergency rooms. Here’s how it works: when dispatchers determine that a medical call does not require immediate paramedic response, they can transfer the caller to a nurse.
