Riverside County’s jail system continues to face scrutiny after a new federal wrongful death lawsuit was filed against the county and the Sheriff’s Department. According to a County Grand Jury report, Riverside jails had the highest homicide rate among large jails in California from 2020 to 2023, making them the second-deadliest in the nation. The report cited systemic issues including security lapses and staff failures that contributed to inmate deaths.The latest lawsuit involves a pretrial detainee who had serious medical conditions and had been receiving hospital treatment before his arrest. Despite multiple hospital visits during his incarceration, the lawsuit alleges he did not receive the medical care he required, including essential cardiac medications.
