Hawaii man sentenced after defrauding elderly Irvine man out of nearly $2 million

A Hawaii man who defrauded an elderly Orange County resident out of nearly $2 million — costing the victim his Irvine home and yacht — has been sentenced to four years in federal prison, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

John Tamahere McCabe, 42, of Kailua, Hawaii, was sentenced to 48 months behind bars and ordered to pay $1,814,000 in restitution, according to the Department of Justice.

McCabe targeted a then-79-year-old victim over several years, from July 2017 through January 2024, the DOJ says, by falsely promising to broker the sale of the man’s yacht…
