Mama duck leads rescuers to 8 ducklings trapped in Laguna Niguel drain

A quick-thinking driver and Orange County firefighters teamed up to rescue eight ducklings that had become trapped inside a storm drain behind a Laguna Niguel shopping center Thursday evening.

According to the Orange County Fire Authority, the rescue unfolded around 6:30 p.m. when a mother duck was seen standing on a wall and repeatedly quacking at someone sitting in a nearby car until the person got out to investigate.

The driver soon discovered the duck’s ducklings were stuck inside the drain and contacted animal services for help.

Firefighters initially could only see three ducklings inside the pipe, as the distressed mother duck remained nearby. Crews then used a bit of ingenuity — and some “duck tape” — wrapping duct tape around the end of a tool to carefully lift the ducklings out one by one…
