Riverside County — A dramatic police pursuit in Jurupa Valley escalated into a hours-long SWAT operation last week, culminating in a suspect’s death and an unexpected controversy. Aerial footage captured by CBS Los Angeles showed a Sheriff’s Department deputy apparently scrolling through dating profiles on his phone while positioned just feet from the crashed vehicle of an armed barricade subject.[1][2] The incident, which unfolded near Jurupa Valley High School, has prompted the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office to launch an internal investigation into the deputy’s conduct.

High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Crash

Deputies initiated the chase around 2 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon after spotting a suspect wanted for grand theft near Pats Ranch Road and Limonite Avenue.[3] The man, described as being in his 40s and reportedly armed, evaded officers in a white Cadillac, leading to a stop-start pursuit that lasted more than an hour through city streets.

At one point, the suspect paused in front of Jurupa Valley High School, prompting a brief lockdown that authorities later lifted as the chase continued. A K-9 unit from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Jurupa Valley station deployed a Grappler device twice in an effort to halt the vehicle safely. The netting system, designed to entangle the rear wheels and axles, failed to stop the car on the first attempt. The second deployment caused the Cadillac to spin out of control and slam into a brick wall on Antigua Drive near the school and a residential neighborhood.[4]

Standoff Turns Tense with Armed Suspect

Following the crash, the suspect refused to exit the crumpled vehicle, barricading himself inside and communicating sporadically with a 911 dispatcher. The Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team arrived to coax a peaceful surrender, but the man stopped responding after deputies deployed pepper balls and sent in robots for reconnaissance.[1]…
