Man shot by deputies after tense pursuit in Perris

A man in the suffering from a mental health crisis was shot by Riverside County deputies Sunday afternoon after a pursuit on the 215 Freeway and a brief physical confrontation in Perris.

The incident began when deputies tried to stop a vehicle heading north on the 215 near the Indian Hill Boulevard exit about 2:15 p.m. The driver refused to pull over, setting off a chase that continued onto surface streets in Perris.

When the vehicle finally came to a stop, the man jumped out and ran. Deputies caught up with him in the street, and struggled with the man to control him. During the confrontation, a deputy deployed a grappler device to try and control the situation without using force…
