Ingleside Police Prove There’s No Racial Profiling in Traffic Stops

Ingleside Police Chief Tammy Burr told City Council members January 23rd that based on the department’s analysis of 2023 traffic stop data there were no documented cases of racial profiling, and that’s what’s been submitted in an annual report to a Texas state agency that monitors such issues involving law enforcement.

More than half a year since the front of Ingleside City Hall was damaged by an elderly motorist who lost control of her vehicle, slamming into the building, repairs are likely expected to start in February and take at least two weeks to complete. Some municipal offices will be relocated to temporary quarters in a mobile trailer outside for the duration.

Each year the Ingleside Police Department submits a report to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards, a watchdog agency that determines if cops are using race as a factor in determining how they make traffic stops or investigate other possible infractions. Known simply as “racial profiling”, national legislation has been in place since 1998 to deter the practice. At the time it was enacted, Congress sought an end to statistics that seemed to substantiate that a disproportionate amount of black and brown drivers was being pulled over and cited.
