The songs of Selena, Little Joe Y La Famlia, Mazz and more are still alive and kicking on Corpus Christi’s newest radio station ― Retro Tejano 104.1.
Owners and creators Ed Ocanas and Eric Cantu said the station has been in the works for about five months before airing early January 2024. The two also created Retro 94.7, a radio station playing classic songs from the ’80s to ’90s.
“We believe that retro listeners still love radio to this day,” Ocanas said. “That’s who we cater to. We felt the Tejano in South Texas is a perfect match for everyone.”
Retro Tejano plays music from the 1970s to around the early 2010s, including artists such as Mazz, Gary Hobbs, Michael Salgado and Hometown Boys.
“We’re trying to keep Tejano music alive,” Cantu said. “In reality, Tejano music is falling apart. When people go to clubs or dances, they dance to the old school Tejano jams — like Joe Lopez and Fama. People love that old school music and that’s what is keeping Tejano alive right now.”
Cantu said he and Ocanas wanted to bring something to this community that people grew up with, as “Corpus Christi has a big Latino community here who loves Tejano music.”
