The nominations for Caller-Times’s Student of the Week initiative are in, and now it’s time for you to pick the best of the best.
Participating Coastal Bend high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors nominated high school students they say have shown outstanding academic and school achievement and community service.
We will announce a winner and runner-up Friday.

And the nominees for Feb. 5 are:
- Brooke Lamb, Calallen High School — Brooke Lamb is a senior at Calallen High School and is in the top of her graduating class. Lamb juggles a strict schedule of Advanced Placement courses and is devoted to working after-hours with Calallen TV. According to her nomination from Calallen ISD, “she has a passion for art and completes artwork for multiple people; many of those are teachers who want her art pieces in there classroom. Brooke plans to attend Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi and eventually become a college professor.”
- Luiz Marquez, West Oso High School — Senior Luiz Marquez has exemplified compassion through community involvement, including a recent project feeding unhoused people in Corpus Christi, providing food, hygiene kits and clothing to over 75 people. He is a dual credit student, Interact Club president and stage manager of the school’s UIL One Act Play. He is involved in many UIL activities and is also a member of Spanish Club, FCCLA and the school yearbook staff. He is a West Oso ISD CTE intern and a Fish for Life mentee. “This young man stays busy year-round with his determination and commitment to his scholastic achievements, community service and the several committees he is an active member of,” his nomination from WOISD reads.
- Macy Rifkin, Flour Bluff High School — Senior Macy Rifkin is the captain of three different sports teams, all while maintaining National Honor Society standing as she takes Del Mar College dual credit courses. In her time at Flour Bluff, Rifkin has become certified in phlebotomy, EKG and patient care, and is nearly done with her certified medical assistant certification. “Rifkin’s dedication and commitment to excellence shine through in every facet of her work,” according to her nomination. Rifkin volunteers as an intermediate intermural coach for volleyball. “Her attitude is beyond reproach, as is her effort,” according to teacher Bryan Beauchamp. “She exudes respect for the teacher and the subject matter.”
- Corely Lewallen, London High School — “Corely Lewallen is an outstanding young student leader at London High School. She takes her leadership role seriously inside the classroom and on the basketball court. She is a member of the National Honor Society (and) Fellowship of Christian Athletes and serves as the treasurer for the senior class. She is an accomplished athlete and mentor with multiple accolades for basketball including Region, South Texas, District and MVP honors over multiple years,” according to her nomination from London ISD.
