A new traffic light outside W.B. Ray High School is now in operation.
In addition to the traffic signal and crosswalk, the scope of the $170,000 project – aimed to boost safety – includes a pedestrian signal and push buttons, according to city of Corpus Christi officials.
The work on S. Staples Street aligns with the “Vision Zero” public safety awareness campaign, said City Manager Peter Zanoni in a news conference Thursday.
“What it means is that by 2040, the city has a goal that no lives will be lost on the roadways or waterways here,” he said. “That includes pedestrians that may be walking, that includes cyclists and that includes drivers.”
About 12,000 vehicles travel on S. Staples Street daily, and about 160 students who cross the street several times per day , Zanoni said.
