Hurricane Beryl first major storm of 2024; other disturbance will affect Coastal Bend

One of the three systems found in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean has upgraded to a hurricane Saturday afternoon.

The storm, now named Beryl, is forecast to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge to the Windward Islands as a major hurricane.

Tracking by the National Hurricane Center expects Hurricane Beryl to pass through Haiti and Cuba Wednesday and Thursday. As for where it will head if it hits the Gulf of Mexico, it’s still too early to determine.

Aside from Beryl, another disturbance could become a tropical depression before moving inland over Mexico early next week. There is a 40% chance of development over the next couple of days.

Increased swells will begin to arrive across the western Gulf of Mexico all day Sunday. As a result, there will be a high risk of rip currents Sunday for beaches in the Coastal Bend.

The risk will likely extend into the later part of next week. Minor coastal flooding is possible.
