Panjo’s Pizza Parlor to celebrate 60 years Sunday

To commemorate its 60th anniversary, Panjo’s Pizza Parlor will hold a celebration with vendors, a car show and pizza by the slice on Sunday.

In September 1964, Panjo’s Pizza Parlor opened its doors in the Gulfway Shopping Center at the corner of Airline and McArdle roads.

Back then, the pizza spot was called Panjo’s Ye Olde Pizza Parlor. It had 18 different types of pizza, hamburgers, beer and soft drinks.

In 1991, Jimmie and Christy Garrett purchased the restaurant. The two operated the pizza parlor, along with their eight daughters.

About 24 years later, Jimmie Garrett passed away.

Stephen Glenn, a friend of the family, helped them cope with their loss. A year later, Christy Garrett became Christy Garrett-Glenn.

The family hosts an annual car show in honor of Jimmie Garrett, who was a car enthusiast. This year, the car show — Back to the ’60s — will be timed to the restaurant’s 60th anniversary.

“We’ve been doing car shows for about five years now and we decided to put the two together to bring more people together,” Glenn said. “If anybody wants cake, we will gladly give them some after they check out the cars.”
