A desal permit was renewed for a plastics plant – but the status of the project is unclear

State officials have renewed a permit integral for the operation of a desalination plant at a Corpus Christi plastic resins manufacturing facility — however, the current status of the proposed desalination project and the larger facility is unclear.

The water quality permit renewal, granted by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality on Friday, allows Corpus Christi Polymers LLC to discharge as much as 38.5 million gallons of wastewater — to include reverse osmosis reject water — into the Inner Harbor each day, agency documents show.

The renewal replaces an existing 2019 water quality permit, the records state.

Corpus Christi Polymers LLC had last year announced a pause in construction of the manufacturing facility — located at 7001 Joe Fulton Corridor — according to a September 2023 news release.

It was unclear as of Tuesday morning whether construction has resumed since then and, if so, when.

The status of the proposed desalination plant, also, was unclear.

Attempts to reach company representatives were unsuccessful Monday and Tuesday.
