Member of Corpus Christi Library Board must forfeit her seat, city officials say

A member of the Corpus Christi Library Board — an advisory panel that has been mired in controversy over proposals that cardholders younger than 18 be restricted from some of the libraries’ materials — will likely be forced to step down from her post due to a city policy.

A letter addressed to Alice Upshaw Hawkins and obtained by the Caller-Times states that Hawkins has automatically forfeited her seat on the Library Board based on her reelection to the Corpus Christi Independent School District board of trustees.

Dated Friday and shown as signed by City Secretary Rebecca Huerta, the message cites the city’s code of ordinances.

“A member may file as a candidate for nomination or election to any non-city public office,” the letter states. “Upon the election or appointment to a non-city public office, or upon filing as a candidate for position on the Corpus Christi City Council, such member shall result in automatic vacancy of his or her position.”
