Corpus Christi community honors Larry ‘Running Turtle’ Salazar

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A local Native American advocate was laid to rest surrounded by family and friends who gathered to honor his legacy in Corpus Christi on Friday afternoon.

Yvette Salazar said her father, Larry ‘Running Turtle’ Salazar was more than just an important role model to her. He was a community leader who passionately spoke out about Native American issues, particularly the effort to build a memorial for the second-largest Native American burial ground in Texas.

“We are hoping and we are going to finish what he started. As far as getting the monument built on Ennis Joslin. That’s going to be his legacy that we’re leaving behind for him,” Salazar said. “He would’ve loved to have seen it built but we are going to get it built for him.”…
