While Gov. Abbott and his cronies lie, our public schools die | Opinion

Texas House Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, is a co-author and sponsor of the Universal Education Savings Account program bill, which became law on May 3.

But instead of the misleading rhetoric of “school choice” and “parental empowerment” that you have repeatedly heard, what we will be really getting is a new way of diverting public funding to private and home schools.

The biggest problem with this program, as we have seen in other states, is that it undermines the real pathway to educational equity: a properly funded, robust and accessible universal public school system, which is what our Texas Constitution requires (Article 7, Section 1). What our Constitution does not require is that the Legislature should be putting the public and private schools in competition with one another for funds and students…
