Nueces County officials hope HB 3093 will help stabilize budget planning

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — At the Nueces County Courthouse, officials are working to solve a tough equation — how to balance the county’s budget.

Constance Sanchez, the county’s budget liaison officer, is one of the key people tasked with making sure every dollar adds up. She said the recent passage of House Bill 3093 could make that job a bit easier — especially when it comes to collecting taxes from some of the county’s largest taxpayers, like refineries.

“They’re a big part of our property tax revenues,” Sanchez said. “I know last year we had an issue with refineries contesting their values — that accounted for about five percent of our revenue — and so that was pretty significant to the county,” she said…
