Sunrise Mall ownership fined 77 times for cleanup delays

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The long-struggling Sunrise Mall is once again under scrutiny—this time for safety and code violations. City officials have issued 77 separate citations against the property, each carrying a potential fine of up to $2,000. Demolition of the building had a deadline of June 1.

If enforced to the maximum extent, the penalties could total more than $150,000. The citations stem from concerns over delays and unsafe conditions at the nearly demolished site.

City Manager Peter Zanoni said the city does not want to put taxpayer money at risk when the private owner has the financial means to address the issues. “We’ll continue on this path,” Zanoni said…
