From saltwater to superpower: Harbor Island’s desal plant just got real

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A massive desalination plant is one step closer to becoming reality on Harbor Island, just off the coast of Port Aransas. The Port of Corpus Christi has signed a major lease agreement with the Nueces River Authority, clearing the way for the project to move into the design and construction phase.

The plant, once completed, could be one of the largest of its kind in the world. The authority plans to build out the facility in phases, ultimately producing up to 450 million gallons of freshwater per day.
