South Texas family warns others after losing thousands in deed fraud scheme

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — While much of the attention during this year’s special legislative session in Austin has focused on the flood prevention and THC, one lesser-known issue is also gaining traction: deed fraud.

Lawmakers are considering ways to increase protections for homeowners and establish tougher penalties for those found guilty of this increasingly sophisticated scheme, through Senate Bill 15.

“It’s a crime that’s more common than you think,” said Mark Scott, president of San Jacinto Title Coastal Bend region. “And like most scams, the crooks are getting better at hiding it.”…
