CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi firefighters are preparing for some life-saving upgrades in the field. Crews recently took part in Mayday training inside an old bank building at Woodlawn Plaza, simulating the desperate moments when a firefighter becomes trapped in a smoke-filled structure.
The department pumped in artificial smoke, but in a real fire the conditions would be far worse. Thick, black smoke can blind even the most seasoned crews, making rescues difficult and dangerous.
