One of the first things I fell in love with when I moved to the South was my immediate obsession with Whataburger. Maybe it’s the signature sweet and savory flavor of the patty, or the fact that there seems to be a delicious burger waiting to be devoured on every other corner of the Ark-La-Tex.
For millions of people across the South, Whataburger is much more than fast food, it’s a way of life.
The company’s history is as bold as its flavor. As the Whataburger website explains, the name was born more than seven decades ago when founder Harmon Dobson had a simple, bold idea: “to serve a burger so big that it took two hands to hold, and so good that after a single bite customers couldn’t help but exclaim, ‘What a burger!’” He opened his first stand on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi, Texas, and the rest is delicious history.
