Corpus Christi ISD will close seven schools next year

Corpus Christi ISD will close seven elementary and middle schools before the 2026-27 school year.

The Corpus Christi Independent School District Board of Trustees was split, but a majority ultimately voted on Jan. 12 to close Fannin, Kostoryz, Sanders and Travis elementary schools and Browne, Haas and Martin middle schools.

Why were the closures proposed?

The district proposed the school closures and consolidations after years of budget deficits. This year alone, the district is operating under a deficit of at least $27.5 million.

District staff has pointed to a communitywide shift of population, with older neighborhoods in the western portions of Corpus Christi emptying of families while Southside neighborhoods continue to grow…
