Jury awards $198M in civil case tied to 2012 Portland park attack

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A San Patricio County jury has awarded $198 million in damages to Kristene Chapa in a civil case connected to the 2012 attack at a Portland park that left her girlfriend dead and Chapa critically injured, according to Houston attorney Tony Buzbee.

Buzbee announced the verdict this week following several days of testimony in San Patricio County state court.

According to Buzbee, jurors deliberated for about two and a half hours before returning the verdict in the case Mary Kristene Chapa v. David M. Strickland, Larry Joe Strickland and Taft Pharmacy
