Abbott waives some regulations for Corpus Christi groundwater wells

Gov. Greg Abbott is waiving certain regulations for a temporary permit for a Corpus Christi groundwater project, and working for certainty that the city will not be curtailed from Lake Texana water in the immediate future — news that has been positively received by some city officials and concern by some rural residents.

The developments come about a week after Abbott slammed Corpus Christi officials over the management of the water crisis during an unrelated news conference. His remarks had focused on the Inner Harbor desalination project, which has seen high-profile state support.

In a March 16 message to the Caller-Times, Abbott’s press secretary, Andrew Mahaleris, wrote that “Corpus Christi is an important economic driver not only for Texas but also the nation.”…
