High-speed chase ends in arrests, children found hungry and unharmed in Portland

PORTLAND, Texas — A routine traffic stop attempt quickly escalated into a dangerous high-speed pursuit Saturday evening across multiple Coastal Bend communities.

According to the San Patricio County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the chase began around 5:20 p.m. just south of Taft along U.S. 181. Troopers attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by 24-year-old Macy Ann Carey, with 25-year-old Juan Daniel Garcia riding as a passenger.

Authorities say the vehicle initially headed north before abruptly turning around and speeding southbound through Taft, Gregory, and into Portland. During the pursuit, speeds reportedly reached up to 125 miles per hour, with the driver at times traveling the wrong way on the highway putting other drivers at serious risk…
