Taft declares local State of Disaster

The City of Taft has followed several other local entities by issuing a declaration of emergency and a Local Disaster designation due to dwindling water resources and the threat of continued severe drought conditions around the region.

On May 1, Taft Mayor Elida Castillo officially signed a Mayoral Declaration of Local State of Disaster due to the severe drought. Like much of the Coastal Bend, Taft first entered drought restrictions in late 2022, and Castillo said she signed the declaration because conditions have not improved.

The initial declaration was set to expire on May 8, but Castillo said in a May 1 social media post that she had plans to bring an extension of the declaration up for a vote at the May 5 city council meeting…
