CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Pirates and Buc Days go hand in hand in the Coastal Bend — but local historians say the region’s real history is far more complicated than the legends often celebrated during the annual festival.
According to Dillon Beal with the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, the Texas coast’s geography actually discouraged heavy pirate activity for centuries.
“We’re standing in an exhibit about the 1554 shipwrecks,” Beal said. “These ships weren’t stopping here. They were just trying to follow the coast, follow the winds. Storm came, blew them into the barrier islands. You get a shipwreck.”…
