Night Sky Lights Up with Power Station Fire in Marietta

Marietta residents were treated to a light show early Thursday morning as a power station caught fire.

The station, which belongs to Cobb EMC, is located on the corner of County Services Parkway and Valor Drive, said Stephen Bennett with Cobb Fire and Emergency Services.

The station was taken offline due to the fire, knocking out power for 6,000 customers, said Mike Codichini, director of member and public relations for Cobb EMC. Bennett said the fire was reported around 12:30 a.m.

“However, power was rerouted and restored by 2 a.m.,” Codichini said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but videos appeared on social media showing the flashing and glowing of the station fire being reflected on the overcast sky in Marietta on Thursday night, lighting up the night sky as the fire raged on.

Bennett said there were no injuries.

“Due to high voltage power lines and high voltage equipment, Cobb Fire units waited on scene to protect any exposures until Cobb EMC was able to arrive on scene to survey the damage,” Bennett said.
