‘Revolutionary Approach’: Local Nonprofit Launches Food Choice Pantry

For Cobb families experiencing food insecurity, a new beacon of hope has been unveiled.

The Family Cupboard was launched in December by Marietta-based nonprofit the Center for Family Resources, allowing families in need to experience a more realistic food shopping experience while still getting necessary assistance.

While most traditional food pantries stock pre-packed meals and groceries, limiting visitors to specific items, this choice pantry will allow families the freedom to pick the food that they really want.

“This revolutionary approach to food distribution is an updated concept to the Center for Family Resources former food pantry,” a press release from the organization reads. “(It’s) designed to empower families with a personal shopping experience while continuing to emphasize the importance of making healthy and nutritious food choices and getting the most out of their shopping budgets.”

Families will feel less like they’re at a pantry, and more like they’re at the grocery store, with three aisles of shelf stable items and fresh produce in a cooler. Visitors will also be accompanied by volunteers who will help provide nutritional information and insights on good shopping habits, according to CEO Melanie Kagan.
