Cobb to Students: Don’t Disrupt School with Protests

Amid plans for Georgia students to protest gun violence on Friday, the Cobb County School District is warning that it will suspend students who disrupt the school day.

Plans of walk-out protests have circulated on social media in the wake of the shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, which left four dead and nine wounded.

“Students’ ability to express themselves is important to us, without disrupting school,” the school district said in a message to parents. “Anyone who disrupts the classroom, school events, or any normal school processes will be disciplined according to district policy. Consequences for students who participate will follow the Cobb County School District Student Code of Conduct and will, at a minimum, be suspended.”

Participating in disruptions could also lead to students being barred from sports and extracurricular activities, the district said.

Protests of students walking out of class occurred across the country in 2018, after 17 people were killed at a high school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
