One month after tragic shooting, Apalachee High seeks to ‘reclaim school’

A month after the tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder that claimed the lives of two teachers and two students, the school is working its way back to a normal schedule.

But as the school seeks normalcy for its students and staff, the community is still wrestling over plans for additional security.

The high school posted this week on its Facebook page that “Apalachee students reclaimed their school and started healing together. The hallways are full of support from across the district, state and country.”

A sporting event can often bring communities together.

School officials reported Thursday they are expecting a large crowd Friday night as the Apalachee High Wildcats play on their home field for the first time this year.

“If you do not have a player … on either team, please allow for the limited tickets to go to AHS and Jackson County High School families and students,” the school asked.

The game will be live streamed on Georgia Public Broadcasting.

On Tuesday night, a contingent of parents attended the Barrow County Board of Education meeting, where news reports show that security measures was the main topic of discussion. New technology was on the agenda with plans expected for a more enhanced security measures by early 2025.
