DOGE terminating lease for USGS office on Norcross that monitors Chattahoochee’s water quality

Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee River are major water sources for the metro Atlanta, but the U.S. Geological Survey office that makes sure the water is safe to drink is itself under threat.

The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and U.S. Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock have been sounding the alarm that the federal Department of Government Efficiency, better known as DOGE, plans to close the 15,120-square-foot USGS office in Norcross that monitors Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee’s water quality.

The DOGE website lists the office’s lease as having been terminated, but it is not clear when the office will actually close down. There have been reports that it might close in August…
