Northside Hospital Gwinnett performs first endoscopic spine surgery

About eight out of 10 adults experience back pain at some point in their lives, whether from a chronic condition or an injury, and endoscopic spine surgery has been proven to help patients heal faster with less pain and quicker recovery times.

Mindful of the discomfort that comes with back issues, surgeons at Northside Hospital have completed the health system’s first ultra-minimally invasive endoscopic spine surgery. On May 22, Dr. Vamsi Kancherla, an orthopedic surgeon, used Arthrex endoscopic spine technology to complete the procedure at Northside Hospital Gwinnett in Lawrenceville.

The new technology uses a pencil-sized endoscope to gain access to small areas of the spine through a tiny incision, eliminating the need for large incisions required for traditional back surgery, minimizing disruption and damage to nearby muscles and reducing the need to remove bone. The procedure – performed by an orthopedic spine surgeon or a neurosurgeon – can be done in an outpatient setting, potentially allowing patients to go home the same day…
