Gwinnett’s interim superintendent says district remains committed to ‘core business’ as new school year begins

As Gwinnett County Public Schools prepares to begin a new school year in the midst of an already months-long superintendent’s search, the district’s interim leader says the system’s focus on student achievement has not wavered.

GCPS students will return to school on Monday for the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year. Although the county’s school board has still not hired a permanent superintendent six months after voting to fire former superintendent Calvin Watts, Interim Superintendent Al Taylor said it is important for district staff to ensure the district doesn’t lose sight of it’s main purpose.

“Our big focus is always the same. It’s our core business. It’s teaching and learning,” Taylor said. “It can be challenging when there’s a lot of external noise and things that are going on, but we’re focused on creating highly engaging and highly successful classrooms for students to maximize and thrive.”…
