Community prepares as SNAP benefits expected to halt

Mid-morning Tuesday, the warehouse at the CARES food pantry was bustling with activity as volunteers unloaded food deliveries that would be sorted, boxed and distributed to customers.

CARES Director Brian Ergle said the nonprofit is making efforts to increase its food supplies ahead of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits that will end if the government shutdown continues.

“We have no idea how much to plan for or what to expect,” said Ergle, who had just been on a call with the Atlanta Food Bank. “If SNAP goes away, people and families just don’t have the margin in their budgets, and they’ve had very little time to plan for that loss.”…
