Brush fire that sent smoke for miles also burned mobile home, injured firefighter, officials say

A brush fire that ignited Sunday afternoon sent a massive plume of smoke into the sky, visible for miles across the region.

According to Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols, crews responded to a 2-acre brush fire on Sandy Drive near Hollingsworth. The fire also involved roughly 100 old tires burning on the property. The thick, dark smoke could be seen from several towns — including Nicholson, where residents reported the column rising high above the treeline.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze by early evening. No injuries were reported…
