Gainesville-based Thumbs Up Mission hosted its 24th Cancer Family Retreat in November, serving 86 families currently battling cancer.
The retreat at Great Woof Lodge in LaGrange served a total of 384 individuals, and saw 261 volunteers. The weekend aims to provide families with healing, laughter and community. The retreat featured several events, including a Saturday water park day, “the world’s largest rubber duck race,” Bingo-Palooza and a “Family Reunion” event, complete with games, dancing and celebration.
However, the faith-based organization said the weekend is about more than memories.
“Beyond the big moments, some of the most meaningful ministry happened quietly,” a release from the organization said. “Dedicated volunteer host families walked alongside guest families throughout the weekend—listening to their cancer journeys, playing with children in the waterpark so parents could rest, and offering simple presence during hard conversations. Volunteers ranged in age from 7 to 77, including high school students, college students, young professionals, and retirees, showing the beauty of multi-generational service. Many returning guest families now serve as volunteers themselves—some even while still battling cancer.”…
