The first day of winter arrived and may have felt more like the continuation of a mild autumn

The first day of winter in 2025 in the local Walton and Gwinnett County areas arrived on Sunday, Dec. 21 along with the rest of the country – and here it felt a little like a gentle shift rather than a dramatic freeze. In fact, it may have felt more like a continuation of fall – and a pretty mild one at that.

With most of the local downtown Christmas events done, the area settled into a quieter rhythm – except for the rush of last minute shoppers. It’s usually a season that invites warm coffee, layered jackets, and a slower pace that feels distinctly small-town Southern. But with a sunny high of 75 degress expected on Christmas day, it may feel a little more like a tropical Christmas.

However, don’t get too comfortable – we still have three months of winter to go so we’re sure to feel its bite before the arrival of Spring 2026. Don’t let this mild Christmas Day weather fool you.
