Car crash on Wilderness Parkway Monday results in injury to driver

There was a serious accident involving a single vehicle on Wilderness Parkway near a four way stop at Summit Drive Monday afternoon.

The Big Canoe POA told residents, “This afternoon, an overturned vehicle accident occurred in the area of Wilderness Parkway at Summit Drive. A person in the car was extracted and transported to a hospital for further medical attention. At this time, Wilderness Parkway is closed. Once open, we expect intermittent closures to follow as the car is retrieved and towed.”

The road is now re-opened. Big Canoe Public Safety has referred our request for information to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Department.

A resident living near the accident told Smoke Signals she heard a loud bang. Others reported seeing the vehicle on it’s side as they passed by the scene. Trees near the vehicle show signs of being skinned by the car’s tumbling off the road.

We don’t have an official explanation, but one possibility is that the driver ran the stop sign at Summit Drive at an excessive amount of speed, causing the vehicle to roll over as they tried to steer right to stay on the road…
