An Ice Storm Warning from the National Weather Service (NWS) has been expanded to include all of North Georgia as Winter Storm Fern approaches.
The entire northern portion of the state, including all of Northeast Georgia, Northwest Georgia, Metro Atlanta and the Athens area, even as far east as Augusta, are under an Ice Storm Warning from Saturday morning, Jan. 24, through Monday morning, Jan. 26.
The NWS’ latest forecast Friday afternoon indicates that anywhere from a quarter of an inch to a full inch of ice accumulation is expected in the Northeast Georgia region due to heavy freezing rain. That ice is expected to have heavy impacts on roadways and power infrastructure in the area.
“Even just a fraction of an inch of ice has major impacts on roadways and makes travel dangerous!” the NWS said in a statement Friday afternoon. “Anticipate major/locally extreme impacts, including dangerous (if not impossible) travel and power outages.”…
