Former St. Simons dentist found guilty on felony murder charge

A Gainesville woman and former St. Simons Island dentist accused of murdering her boyfriend in March of last year has been found guilty on four of the seven charges against her, including felony murder.

Suzanne Mericle was arrested on March 8, 2025 after the shooting death of 68-year-old James David Barron of Gainesville.

The jury found Mericle guilty on felony murder during the crime of criminal damage to property that caused the death of Barron, reckless conduct (reduced from the original aggravated assault charge), first-degree criminal damage to property, and tampering with evidence.

She was found not guilty on the malice murder she faced, as well as felony murder with aggravated assault causing the death of Barron. She was also found not guilty on a charge of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony charge she faced…
