A petition aiming to stop a Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) project that would add a roundabout and other improvements to Gainesville’s historic Green Street has garnered over 200 signatures.
The project, which was approved in 2020, would add improvements to just over a half-mile of the roadway, including adding a raised median and physically widening the street’s four lanes. The number of lanes will not be increased.
The estimated cost for the project is just over $23 million.
The petition, which was started on Change.org, says organizers believe the project will disturb the historical nature of the street, could lead to the loss of 37 trees and impact 68 other trees, and could affect access to the business along the corridor.
