Epic Spiral Slide, Hidden Cinema, What More Could You Want?

Some emails stop me in my tracks. That was the case Saturday when a photo of an epic spiral slide popped up. Why’s that, you ask? Because the slide is INSIDE the house.

While interior slides may not be novel, they are rare at the luxury price point. Notably, Sky House in New York City has an 80-foot interior slide and just sold for $20 million, while London’s Rainbow House features a four-story slide connecting the master bedroom to the kitchen. Now a luxury rental, the latter lists for nearly $4,700 a week.

Of course, this indoor slide at 5343 Bonita Ave. is not the first in Dallas. Mark Molthan built one for billionaire Thomas Dundon that Candy wrote about in 2011. In 2016, Williams Trew Realtor Seth Fowler famously slid down one in Fort Worth’s Montserrat for us!

My question is, why doesn’t everyone have a slide? It makes perfect sense to me. But an epic spiral slide is not the only cool thing you are going to find in this contemporary custom home. There is a second hidden entrance to the first-floor media room. It’s accessed through a bookcase in the office, which opens as a door into the media room.

And what a media room, because there is yet another hidden feature. A king-sized bed slides out of an enormous drawer because who does not want to watch a big screen in total comfort? Think about the sleepovers! Your kids are going to go bonkers over this. In the daytime, this room doubles as a playroom once you open up the blackout screen that reveals a window behind the media seating. It’s also essentially an extra guest room, so a win-win all around.

Owners Jose and Noreen Cabrera built this home in 2015. “Both of us are quite immature,” Noreen joked. “One of our dreams was to have a house with a slide. So, when we decided to build, we centered the design on the slide. Working with AIA Award-winning architect Jonathan Delcambre, they created what is probably the most entertaining house for kids and adults alike. It was not the easiest of feats because getting the custom bright red slide in the house and into position was out of the builder’s comfort zone…
